Today I wrote an artist statement for a submission and I don't think I went about it correctly. I found myself mostly explaining the why and the how. Here's the what, as in what I believe:
in the finely crafted
in making things by hand
in attention to materials
in experimentation
in process and the gestation of a piece
in the trial-run
in refining technique

That's me not being clear again (insert sheepish emoticon here) The post contains what I *didn't* send in the submission. I wrote it here as a regret, mea culpa, get-it-out-of-my-system sort of thing.

Artists statements are the hardest things- it is so difficult to come up with something that doesn't sound pompous, stilted, forced, silly... I absolutely hate it when I am asked for one. And I don't think anyone reads them anyway!
