about
Sonya Philip studied art and printmaking in high school with every intention of going to art school. Life intervened, as did other areas of fascination, eventually leading to an MFA in Creative Writing.
Sonya came to knitting in her 20s and immersed herself in the craft, by teaching classes and designing patterns, occasionally flirting with areas where art and craft slip. Knitting led to working with wool in both needle and wet felting techniques.
An object that is hand knit or felted contains incredible tension - it is evidence of a conscious choice to make by hand what is so readily available through mechanized means.
As a largely self-taught artist, Sonya enjoys the freedom of exploring and stretching mediums, creating areas of intersection between fiber, paper, wax and clay.
