textile sketch

textile sketch - Jan 27

After last week's textile sketch, I thought about burning holes. I like the smell of burning paper. Burning wool on the other hand, smells awful, especially indoors. I'm kind of in love with cardboard and cut down a piece to act as a backing. I was pleased with the simplicity of the sewn linen in between the row of holes. It wasn't until I was taking pictures, that I realized how much it looked like a cracker.

I'm starting a series of casual experiments called textile sketch. I don't know how it will develop, but this one was made without a clear idea and using things I had at hand on my table.

spinning I'm hand spinning yarn for a new series I'm showing next month at Secession Art and Design. It's been quite a while since I've used a spinning wheel and it takes some getting used to.

yarn and roving

I spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, ushering out the old year at A Verb for Keeping Warm's Day of Color. There was spinning, weaving, carding and I tried my hand at indigo dyeing. My skein of yarn and some roving will marinate in their plastic bag home for a week. Indigo is pretty mysterious stuff and I look forward to working with it more. Happy New Year to everyone!
